Stefano Novaria

As Stefano’s home was on the slopes of Mount Mombarone, along a route used by escaped PoWs to cross the mountains, he and his family often encountered them and welcomed them in.

I should point out that I certainly did not do this work for monetary reward, rather I made it possible for these Allied prisoners to rest, partake of food and drink and receive the information or a guide to accompany them to travel information or to whichever group of partisans I thought best.

In particular, he housed Eric Morris, Charles Kitto, and Charles Palmer for five months, between October 1943 and February 1944 (it should be noted that Morris instead declared he stayed only six weeks at Stefano’s home), providing them with food (milk and bread in the morning, soup, meat, and vegetables for lunch and dinner), shelter, and tobacco. When they left he also gave them clothes and a small sum of money.
